Rlys urged to deploy profit in new projects

The Union Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Yadav, has been urged to use the Rs 20,000-crore profit earned by the railways in development and identification of new projects.
Mr Giridhar Prabhu, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Large Scale Industries at Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), told Business Line on Monday that the railways should spend a portion of the profit earned in completing projects such as the Hubli-Ankola line and for taking up survey work on the Mangalore-Madikeri-Mysore line and its implementation.
As Karnataka has a major port in Mangalore, direct railway connectivity to Hubli, Mysore and Bangalore, and other hinterland areas, could bring additional 18 million tonnes cargo to the port, he said.
The Ministry should consider deploying the surplus amount in identifying new routes connecting the port with the hinterland.
Mr Shekhara Poojary, President of the Association of New Mangalore Port Stevedores, said that the decision to reduce freight charges would help in better movement of fertiliser cargo from the port to the hinterland.
This will benefit farmers, as it would bring down the transportation cost.
Mr S. Srinivasa Kamath, Honorary Secretary of KCCI, said that the railways has shown efficiency by reducing freight and passenger fares.
