Kolkata Feb. 26 Private sector wagon and railway coach manufacturers feel that the Railway Budget 2007 has for the first time opened an opportunity before the industry to modernise its skills. "The new procurement plans pose a real challenge to the wagon industry," felt Mr Ramesh Maheswari, President and CEO of Texmaco Ltd.

The Rail Budget has announced plans for replacing old low-axle load wagons with the new generation high axel freight cars. Also unlike in the past, the industry is now invited to manufacture wagons as per their own design.

New avenues

"Far from making conventional wagons, the industry has to reorganise and equip itself with the world class manufacturing and design expertise," Mr Maheswari said, adding that this was the "first time" the Rail Ministry had expressed interest in procuring wagons to the industry's own design.

Mr P.K. Ruia, Chairman of Jessop and Co, voiced a similar opinion. "The decision to accept new designs developed by the wagon manufacturers will benefit the industry. The initiative will better the profitability of the smart players in the wagon industry, while bringing in significant savings for the Railways," he said.

Jessop, which is also a coach maker, feels that the Rs 5,000 crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project has opened fresh opportunity before the company.
