New Delhi Feb. 26 The Indian Railways has invited companies to enter into service-level agreements with it for running of Merry Go Round (MGR) systems. MGR systems are essentially rail tracks laid by companies, mainly power sector players, to transport coal within the boundaries of their units.

"The Railways has the domain expertise in running these systems more efficiently and economically. Therefore, we invite all existing and new companies to enter into Service Level Agreements with the Railways for running of MGRs," Mr Lalu Prasad said. According to senior Railway Board officials, the annual coal movement by powerhouses using MGR systems is estimated at around 250 million tonnes.

Power major NTPC Ltd operates its own MGR systems for ferrying coal within the boundaries of most of its pithead-based stations. For instance, nearly 85 per cent of NTPC's Vindhyachal super thermal power station's requirement of nearly 45,000 tonnes of coal a day is met by the MGR route and the balance by way of wagon movement from the mines of Central Coalfields Ltd and even far-off Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd.
