Chennai airport cargo handling down 12% in Jan

Chennai Feb. 27 Cargo handling through the Chennai airport declined by nearly 12 per cent to 15,253 tonnes in January compared with 17,346 tonnes in December, according to sources.

Total imports declined to 7,227 tonnes in January compared with 9,145 tonnes in December. Similarly, exports declined to 8,206 tonnes in January compared with 8,203 tonnes in December.

Incidentally, the December cargo handling was the highest ever handled in a month at the Chennai airport, said sources.

Import of electronics/electrical, which is the largest import item handled through the Chennai airport, slipped to 2,428 tonnes in January against 3,326 tonnes in December. Similarly, exports of this cargo also declined to 715 tonnes from 760 tonnes.

Exports of textile and garments increased to 2,974 tonnes from 2,756 tonnes.
