Easing congestion The land development work is expected to begin shortly after the examination of the plan and drawings by the expert committee Royal Haskoning, a Netherlands-based design and supervision consultant, had prepared the drawing
The construction of the first phase of the terminal will be subject to approval of the plan by the port authorities. Senior port officials said here that the land development work on the acquired land is expected to begin shortly after the examination of the plan and drawings by the expert committee comprising engineers and technicians of the port. There may not be any changes in the plan as the DP World officials was in constant touch with the port during its preparation, the officials added. Royal Haskoning, a Netherlands-based design and supervision consultant, had prepared the drawing. The drawing includes the design of the container terminal, wharves and container handling yards. The port officials also pointed out that the construction of the rail connectivity from Edappally and road connectivity from Kalamassery to the project site would also commence within a month. According to them, all the related works connected with the project are going on in full swing and they expressed hope that the first phase would be commissioned in April 2009. It is pointed out that DP World would invest around $200 million in the first phase, which would have the capacity to handle one million TEU. The first phase work involves building of 600 metres quay, on-dock rail head serviced by rail mounted gantry cranes, 30 hectares of yard and procuring of 6 super post Panamax cranes to handle some of the largest vessels afloat today. Sources in the shipping circles pointed out that the commissioning of the Vallarpadam project would alleviate the congestion and open up the market by ensuring that shipping lines have a choice through common user facilities of the company. The project is destined to become a premier gateway to southern India whilst offering an alternative to Sri Lanka and Singapore for container transhipment.
