`MEANINGLESS' BUDGET: Jute mill workers and their families at the Shyam Nagar workers' quarters in Kolkata on Tuesday. The workers in West Bengal are having a hard time as some 54 mills across the State have been closed from January 5 due to the indefinite strike called by CITU and INTUC. Many of the workers, hailing from the neighbouring States of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, have left for their towns as the strike has shown no signs of coming to an end. But several workers and their families continue to stay in the State as their children are appearing for the final exams. When they were asked about the Budget, none of them could understand what it was or why it took place every year.
