Though some of the films are going to be released before the World Cup begins, there are apprehensions that the matches will have an impact on the subsequent run.

Hyderabad Feb. 27 It is not just parents who are worried over the schedule of the upcoming World Cup Cricket in the West Indies next month. Filmmakers and exhibitors too are a worried lot as some major films such as Munna (Prabhas starrer), Okkadunnadu (Gopichand) and Sivaji (Rajnikanth) are slated for release during the summer.

Generally, the summer season is considered to be the best for the industry. No wonder, big production houses and film actors plan well ahead to release at least one of their films during summer.

Highest Grosser

The fears of the film industry about the World Cup are not without any reason. Over 20 films were released during last summer and the list included the blockbuster Pokkiri that went on to become the highest grosser in the history of Telugu film industry.

"They are well aware of that problem. They know how hard it will hit them. Some of them have either postponed their releases or advanced the release dates. They, however, do not admit that it is because of the World Cup," a representative of a big production house told Business Line. "This is the reason behind the less number of films that are lined up for the season," he said.

Incidentally, the Indian cricket team toured West Indies around the same period last year, affecting the box office collections significantly. Though India was defeated 1-4 by the hosts then, the series had a telling affect on the summer releases. The other films that are scheduled for release this summer are Muni (Lawrence), Jagadam, Operation Duryodhana (Srikanth) and Gundammagaari Manavadu (Ali).

Though some of the films are going to be released before March 13 (when the World Cup begins), there are apprehensions that the matches will have an impact on the subsequent run.
