Goldman Sachs to contribute $1 m to Room to Read

Bangalore Feb. 27 Goldman Sachs Foundation, a NGO outfit of the leading financial institution, will contribute $1 million of expansion capital to Room to Read India, an organisation focusing on providing education to underprivileged children.

The US-based Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to establish schools, libraries and other educational infrastructure. The organisation is currently establishing educational infrastructure in Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

It has built 221 schools, established over 3,300 libraries, published 100 new local language children's titles, donated 2 million books, established 108 computer and language labs, and funded over 2,300 long-term girls' scholarships.

Foundation's support

The Goldman Sachs Foundation grant will help strengthening educational system by establishing 450 bi-lingual libraries in both urban slums and rural communities over the next three years. The Foundation's support will also increase the quality and capacity of the educators throughout India . The grant also allows for the donation of over a million books to this network of libraries. An estimated three lakh children will benefit from these libraries.

The collective aim is to provide access to books and libraries in Delhi, and in the rural provinces of Rajasthan and Uttaranchal.
