Mr Anand Agarwal, Chairman of ABC India Pvt Ltd, a major road transport company active in the north-eastern region, welcomed the Union Finance Minister's proposal in the Union Budget for 2007-08 for allocation of funds for the development of the roadways in the north-east, expressing hope that the allocation would expedite the road construction work in the region.
"The condition of the roads within the region and those leading to it leaves much to be desired and there are many road bridges which are too weak to support the movement of goods vehicles," Mr Agarwal said, adding, "hopefully, all these will be addressed during the construction of the East West corridor".
The pace of work so far on the East West Corridor, as it was pointed, left much to be desired. The Union Government's present initiative therefore should hasten the process, he said. Precisely for the same reason, higher allocation for the rail-cum-road bridge at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh in Assam, whose work was already in progress, was welcome. After all good roads and improved connectivity would not only help achieve smoother movement of vehicles but also a lower transportation cost.
An issue, which, he felt deserved attention was the bureaucratic bungling in the implementation of VAT.
