Kochi March 1 The Kuwait-based KGA group of companies is venturing into the hospitality and tourism sectors in Kerala with an initial outlay of Rs 600 crore in the next five years.

The company has partnered with the InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) - a globally recognised hotel chain known for its large number of rooms - to set up a five-star deluxe hotel project in Kochi with an investment of Rs 220 crore. The hotel Crowne Plaza, with 210 rooms, located at NH 47 bye-pass in Kundannur, is scheduled to commence operations in the second quarter of 2009.

Addressing a press meet after laying the foundation stone for the project, Mr K.G. Abraham, Managing Director, said that with further diversification in the coming years, the company plans to expand its operations to the business and tourism destinations such as Kovalam and Munnar in the near future. The company would be able to provide about 500 rooms to the hospitality industry by 2012, he added. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Michael Herrmann, Director (Operations), South West Asia, IHG, said that Crowne Plaza Cochin will be the brand's first foray into the South Indian market and the group's third brand-defining Crowne Plaza hotel in the country. There are 40 Crowne Plaza across Asia Pacific and 250 worldwide.

The new partnership is a clear reflection of our commitment towards further portfolio expansion in India and is in line with the IHG's focus on developing strong hotel brands. Crowne Plaza Cochin will showcase and support the brand's development in the country and assist in the establishment of a brand-compliant Crowne Plaza in South West Asia.
