March 1
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore, is organising a `Conference on Urban Planning and Construction for the Future' (ConNext 2007) here on March 2 and 3 to discuss the issues that have a bearing on the preparation of a master plan for Coimbatore to ensure its orderly growth.
Mr Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman, CII, Coimbatore Zone, said the technology sector was showing greater interest in Tier II cities to expand its operations and these cities were also favoured by global realty and investment companies. He expected the conference to attract more than 100 participants from construction and infrastructure sectors and also from the town planning department.
Mr K. Thangaraj, Vice-Chairman, CII, Coimbatore, said while the smaller cities provided high growth potential, there were issues such as increasing operating costs, real estate supply constraints and so on, that should be taken into consideration.
Also meriting attention were the need for public private partnership, updating of the city Master Plan in line with the developmental needs of the city and so on.
Mr S.K. Singha Roy, Convenor, Infrastructure Panel, CII, Coimbatore, said as big real estate developers were making an entry into Coimbatore, it was imperative for the existing players in the region to be competitive.
Among the issues to be discussed in the conference are evolving a master plan for Coimbatore, reforms in policy/procedures for getting approvals, building infrastructure, financing options and taxation and best practices in construction sector, according to a CII release.
