Retailing States - Maharashtra Shell opens outlet in Pune Our Bureau
The company is also in the process of opening outlets in Gujarat and Greater Mumbai in the near future and adding more stations in Pune, Mr Surinderdeep Singh, Managing Director and Retail General Manager for SIMPL said. The fuel, largely sourced domestically and supplemented with overseas supplies if required, contains a Shell additive to make it more economically beneficial. It is tested for specific gravity at various stages at the retail outlet to ensure quality. The product range of Shell Super, Shell Unleaded and Shell Diesel will keep pace with changing demands. The stations are fitted with double-walled fuel tanks that have sensors to detect leakages, and must conform to standardised safety norms, including size, Mr Singh said. Among the outlet's features are a workforce comprising 30 per cent women, 5 per cent jobs for physically challenged persons and a Shell Select Convenience store. SIMPL, a subsidiary of Shell, is the first MNC to obtain government approval to open 2,000 such stations across the country. It launched operations in India in Bangalore in 2004, and subsequently in Chennai and Hyderabad, and is looking at a pan-India presence, Mr Singh said. However, the minimum size requirement coupled with high land prices virtually ruled out large metros, especially Mumbai, from the Shell retail station map, he admitted. Currently Bangalore has 12 stations. A pilot study to introduce a fuel card is under way at three stations.
