Visakhapatnam March 2 There is an urgent need to commission the new runway at Visakhapatnam airport and to facilitate night landing of aircraft, according to Mr N. Janardhana Reddy, the member of the Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam.

In separate letters to the Union Defence Minister, Mr A.K Antony, and the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, he pointed out that the expansion of the airport had been taken up jointly by the Indian Navy, the Andhra Pradesh Government and the Airports Authority of India at a cost of Rs 191 crore.

He said in the letters, "As a part of the expansion project, the construction of the new 10,000-feet long runway has been completed more than a month ago. However, it has to be inspected and cleared by the DGCA and the Navy and the instrument landing system (ILS) is also awaiting clearance. I appeal to you to complete these procedures as soon as possible to facilitate commissioning of the new runway and for creating night landing facilities at the airport."

He said the matter brooked no delay, as many airlines were ready and eager to operate flights from Vizag in view of the growing importance of the city as a major industrial and IT centre, besides being a sought-after tourist destination.

He expressed displeasure at the procedural delays in commissioning the new runway and urged the Ministers to expedite matters.
