Aquaculture States - Andhra Pradesh National aquaculture centre to be opened at Kakinada today Our Bureau
According to Mr Saifuddin Anis, Deputy Director of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Vijayawada, who will also function as the CEO of the NaCSA, the centre would be registered as a society and the MPEDA Chairman would be its ex-officio president. A governing council had been formed in October 2006, to guide and manage the society.
To train farmers
He said the NaCSA would have the headquarters in Kakinada and there would be branches in all the coastal states. The centre would train farmers and enable them to adopt eco-friendly aqua farming practices to produce quality products both for the domestic and export markets. He said the NaCSA had been formed by the MPEDA in association with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in the Asia-Pacific, Bangkok. He said quality management was of the essence in the seafood sector and, although India was a major player in the international market, there was no concerted effort till now to maintain quality through the supply chain. Besides, new trends such as certification, traceability and eco-labelling were emerging in the seafood sector in the international market and there is a need to educate and prepare Indian aqua farmers to face these challenges. The NaCSA would organise small aqua farmers into clubs and societies and act as a nodal agency to help them adopt better farming practices for better yields and returns.
