Aquaculture Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Marine products export to touch $4 b by 2010: Jairam Ramesh Our Bureau
Gujarat, Maharashtra and Orissa have also been identified as growth centres for export of marine products.
Mr Ramesh, who inaugurated the National Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (NaCSA) here on Saturday, said Andhra Pradesh was playing a prominent role in the export of marine products, especially shrimp, and the Union Government, therefore, thought it fit to set up the centre to train the farmers. The National Fisheries Board had been set up in Hyderabad to promote fisheries in the State, he said. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Orissa had also been identified as growth centres for export of marine products. Earlier, at a press conference, Mr Ramesh said the Union Government was taking all steps to help chilli farmers in Andhra Pradesh. ``We are setting up a spices park at Guntur and we have sanctioned 100 poly houses for drying of chilli. Twenty of them are already in operation. The Spices Board would take all necessary steps in the direction,'' he said. Mr G. Mohan Kumar, the Chairman of the MPEDA, said the establishment of the centre was a big step forward. Mr M.M. Pallam Raju, Union Minister of State for Defence, representing the Kakinada Lok Sabha constituency, also spoke.
