UK-India education research meet on March 7

Hyderabad March 3 The UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKERI), which has a funding to the tune of £10 million, will hold an important meeting in Hyderabad during March 7-9, to discuss new partnerships and projects.

Designed to facilitate a step-change in research and education cooperation between the two countries, UKERI has also attracted strong support from four corporates — BAE, BP, GlaxoSmithKline and Shell, who have together contributed £4 million and are offering professional advise.

Launched in September 2005, when the UK Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, visited India, UKERI has so far decided to fund seven projects this year.

At least, 40 projects are being planned for assistance so that a strong base and partnership is built between Indian and UK higher education institutions.

Among the important delegates from the UK, who are expected to take part in the Hyderabad meet are Mr Peter Cheung, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation, Ms Carolyn Campbell, Head of International Affairs of Qulaity Assurance Agency for Higher Education, and Prof Steve Baskerville, Pro Vice-Chancellor of De Montfort University. India would be represented among others by Prof K.C. Reddy, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Council for Higher Education, Prof Moolchand Sharma, Vice-Chairman of UGC, Dr K. Madhu Murthy and Prof Prasad Krishna, Advisors of AICTE, along with Mr Sam Pitroda, Chairman of National Knowledge Commission, who will join the discussion through videoconference, according to a press release from the British Council here.

The objective of the workshop is to ensure that all programmes are delivered through collaborative arrangements between the UK and Indian higher education institutes, said Mr K. Sudhakar Goud, Manager of the British Council in the release.
