Govt achievements in education, environment praised

New Delhi March 5 The annual Plan of Delhi for 2007-08 has been fixed at Rs 9,000 crore at a meeting here on Monday between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahulwalia, and theChief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit.

In his initial remarks, Mr Ahluwalia said that Delhi should develop infrastructure comparable to the best in the world being the National Capital.

He lauded the State Government for achievements in education and environment, stating that the total forest and tree cover, which was 151 sq. km in 2001, has risen to 268 sq. km.

Rainwater harvesting

He said electricity distribution programmes through private sector have been successfully completed during the Tenth Plan.

The Plan panel advised the State Government to promote rainwater harvesting and develop all water bodies.

Ms Dikshit said that besides plan performance, the State Government has set of a number of measures designed to promote transparent administration through release of citizen charters by all departments dealing with implementation of Right to Information Act, public grievance commission and application of information technology for improvement of services to the citizens.

Major achievements

She said major achievements during the 10th Plan include completion of firsts phase of metro, construction of 26 flyovers and commissioning of first phase of 330 MW power generation plant. Stamp duty was reduced from 13 per cent to 8 per cent.

In the Eleventh Plan, housing for economically weaker sections would be taken on a priority.

New modes of public transport, in addition to new corridors of metro under phase II would be put in place to ensure safe and convenient public transport system, she said.
