Bangalore March 5 The Underwriters Laboratories, a third-party safety certification organisation, has initiated talks with large retailers to set up product safety standards. The facility will focus on safety standards of electronic and electrical appliances sold by the outlets. The company, which has through its subsidiary, established testing and other facilities in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi, did not specify the investment figure.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr Keith Williams, President and CEO, UL Inc, said as retailers were expected to source their goods from different markets, the sourcing quality had to be strengthened.

He said UL, with about 150 strong engineering and scientific professionals, aimed at playing a key role in partnership with local agencies to raise the product safety bar. Recycling revenues

UL, a non-profit company, has a unique model of ploughing back its revenues from the services offered to its customers in not only developing safety standards for electrical and electronics products but also ensuringcompliance through a rigorous follow-up service mechanism.

Said Mr Williams, "UL does not receive any funds from the US Federal Government and provides its services from the revenue it generates form its customers and donations."

Mr Williams said UL would work with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which has set high standards, and other such agencies in helping Indians align themselves with different safety standards followed globally to enhance their competitiveness in global markets.
