Coimbatore March 6 Though the State Government has sanctioned the six-laning of a 16-km stretch of the Avanashi Road from Uppilipalayam junction in Coimbatore city to Neelambur bye-pass, plans for the construction of three flyovers that formed part of the original proposal submitted by the CII have been given up, at least for the present.

The CII - Coimbatore, which had commissioned the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) to prepare a feasibility report on the project, is keen on early execution of the project owing to the burgeoning vehicle population on the busy national highway. It is confident that once the IT park, comes up on this road the government would rethink the need for the flyovers.

Mr Jayakumar Ramdass, former Chairman, CII - Coimbatore Zone, told Business Line that the project report prepared by CII put the cost of the six-laning project at about Rs 130 crore, but the State Government had sanctioned it with an outlay of Rs 27 crore.
