Kolkata March 7 Paradip Port Trust (PPT) hopes to end the current fiscal with a traffic throughput of 39 million tonnes (mt) as against 33 mt handled in 2005-06, thus posting more than 18 per cent growth. Till February, the throughput was 35.39 mt, an 18.17-per cent growth over the corresponding period of 2005-06.

"We are confident of maintaining the growth trend in the current month also," Mr K. Raghuramaiah, Chairman, PPT, told Business Line over phone from Paradip, pointing out that in February alone, the port handled 3.75 mt of traffic, surpassing the target of 3.65 mt set for the month.

Mr Raghuramaiah attributed the improvement to three items namely, iron for exports, thermal coal for coastal shipments and imported fertiliser raw materials. Till February, the throughput of iron ore was 11.22 million tonnes, thermal coal 11.43 mt and imported fertiliser raw materials 2.6 mt.

During the same period, the throughputs of other items were as follows: petroleum products 1.27 mt; coking coal 3.84 mt; finished fertilisers 88,577 mt; container cargo (in tonnes) 28,275 mt, equivalent of 2,276 TEUs, and other items 4.89 mt, he added.
