Private sector provides more jobs

The compound annual growth of employment in the State was significantly low when compared with that of all-India figures.

Hyderabad March 7 Contrary to the claims of Government on employment generation, the number of jobs in the public sector in Andhra Pradesh in the last one decade have in fact declined significantly. The number came down to 13.74 lakh by the end of March 2006 as against 15.10 lakh, which incidentally is the highest figure in the history of the State, in March 1997.

What is more worrying is the momentum of the drop in the last three years. While there were 14.75-lakh employees in the public sector by the end of March 2003, the number fell to 14.43 lakh a year later. It further declined to 13.95 lakh in 2005 and 13.74 lakh in 2006.

Despite an increase in jobs in the private sector, the total size of employment in the State showed a decline from 21 lakh in 2003 to 20.01 lakh in 2006, according to data in the latest Economic Survey of the State.

It was the private sector that actually helped the State in getting more jobs for the youth. The number of youth in the private sector had gone up to 6.26 lakh from 4.72 lakh during the period.

The disappointing employment scenario did not reflect the national scene. The compound annual growth of employment in the State was significantly low when compared with that of all India figures.

The rate during 1999-2000 to 2004-05 was just 2.65 per cent as against the national average of 4.43 per cent. During the same period, the employment elasticity (growth in employment in response to growth in economy) too fell below at 0.41 of the national average of 0.74.

Daunting task

About 3.50-lakh youth enrolled at employment exchanges pose a daunting task before the Government and the unemployment rates in the State continues to be higher than the national averages.
