New Delhi March 7 Though Thursday would be celebrated as International Women's Day, the latest findings of a survey reveals that only a small number of women hold top positions in corporate houses worldwide, while in India only 14 per cent of women make it to the top management level.

According to the latest Grant Thornton's International Business Report, four out of 10 businesses globally have no women senior managers. However, worldwide, 22 per cent of senior positions are filled by them.

Asia dominates the top position chart with 97 per cent of women in Philippines in senior management levels, while India stands at a contrast of 14 per cent. About 56 per cent of businesses in India have women at senior levels, as against the global average of 59 per cent.

"The world over, gender equality remains a contentious issue. Political and corporate rhetoric does not reflect the ground reality. The Grant Thornton report, however, indicates some hopeful trends with Asia taking the lead. When Indian politicians pontificate about `inclusive growth', women are never factored even though their status is that of minorities," said founder of Biocon, Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
