New Projects VW to assemble engines at Pune plant Alka Kshirsagar
Pune March 8 Volkswagen AG plans to assemble engines at its proposed car manufacturing facility at Chakan in Pune. It will look at their production once the volumes roll in. Speaking to Business Line from Germany, Dr John Chacko, who will be heading the operations in India, confirmed that the company was "planning an assembly plant for engines" in the initial stages. He added that the possibility of increasing the depth of production would depend on the volumes. The company, which opened a temporary office at Baner a month ago has begun scouting for troops and suppliers, and has installed a small planning unit. The groundbreaking ceremony at the site is expected to happen in early April, and amongst those who Dr Chacko is hoping will attend is Dr Martin Winterkorn, the group President. "I want to launch with a big bang, and invite all the board members," Dr Chacko quipped. The Chakan facility, located over 230 hectares of land, and involving a total investment of Rs 2,400 crore is poised to begin production of up to 1,10,000 cars annually by 2009. Though the business plan suggests that the Passat will be the first model to roll off the assembly line, Dr Chacko said that they are still working on the possibilities.
