The event, jointly organised by the Kerala State Tourism Department and the Confederation of Indian Industries (Kerala Chapter), is designed to develop the State as the most preferred destination in the world for modern and traditional healthcare requirements.

Dr Philip Augustine, Chairman, Kerala Health Tourism - 2007, said here that nearly 1,000 participants from the country and abroad were expected to participate in this year's event. The number of participants has increased significantly from last year when the event was held for the first time.

He said business visitors from 10 countries such as the UK, the US, Canada, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives and West Asia had confirmed their participation.

Dr Augustine said the State aimed to become one of the top-five destinations for medical tourism in the world by 2010 when the number of medical tourists coming here was expected to go up to one lakh from 15,000 in 2006.

This year, the event will also focus on ayurveda.
