For bird flu

INCREASING COSTS: Star anise kept for sale at a retail shop in Kochi. Short supply of star anise has led to rise in its import, despite an increase in the prices in the global market. During April-November 2006, about 1,800 tonnes, valued at Rs 10.18 crore, were imported at a unit value of Rs 56.55 per kg. The plant produces an acid that is used in the manufacture of Tamiflu, the only drug shown to be effective in treating bird flu.
