Retailing States - West Bengal McDonald's to open more outlets in eastern, N-E regions Our Bureau
Kolkata March 8 McDonald's India has plans to invest Rs 100 crore on the opening of 15-20 restaurants in the eastern and north-eastern regions within the next three to five years. The company, on Thursday, announced the opening of eastern India's first McDonald's Family Restaurant at Park Street, Kolkata. With this, the number of McDonald's restaurants in India goes up to 108, with 63 in the northern and eastern regions and 45 in the southern and western regions. Addressing a news conference here, Mr Vikram Bakshi, Joint Venture Partner and Managing Director, McDonald's India (North & East), said 70 per cent of the Rs 100-crore investment would be on expansion of the brand's presence and introduction of new formats. The rest would be spent on back-end operations. Mr Bakshi said McDonald's has set up a regional distribution centre here, which would cater to restaurants in and around Kolkata.
Cluster approach
Adopting a cluster approach, the company has initiated the process of identifying key locations in a 500-700 km radius of the city for further expansion in the region. Besides creating employment opportunities, the expansion plans would provide "opportunities for local sourcing of certain agricultural products via commercial farming". According to Mr Bakshi, plans have been firmed up to add three more McDonald's outlets in Kolkata within the next one year.
