RISING EXPORTS: Onions being loaded on to a mini truck in Kochi. Onion exports during April-January in the current fiscal have touched 9.43 lakh tonnes against 7.70 lakh tonnes during the same period a year ago. Maharashtra accounts for 75 per cent of the total onion exports from the country. Indian onions are in demand owing to their strong pungency in the Gulf countries, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
