Air India to cut cabin crew; save Rs 50 cr annually

Our Bureau

New Delhi March 9 In a move that could help Air India save Rs 50 crore annually, the airline is to cut down on the number of cabin crew staff that will be used to operate flights.

"From March 15, the airline will have a cabin crew strength of 16 on board the Boeing 747-400 against 19 currently, eight on the Airbus A-310 against 10 presently and 13 on the Boeing 777-300 against the current levels of 15. The move is in keeping with international practices and will see Air India match the cabin crew levels maintained by other mega airlines," sources told Business Line.

In addition, on the Boeing 747-300 aircraft, the cabin crew numbers will come down to 11 from 15, while the Boeing 747-300 (Combi) would, henceforth, have 12 cabin crew members in place of the existing 15.

The implementation of the decision will also help the airline meet the requirement of 500-cabin crew annually for the next seven years, during which it is to induct 68 new Boeing aircraft.

The financial saving to the airline will come not only from not having to induct more cabin crew but also because of drastic cut in hotel expenses among others, sources said.
