No question of revoking transfer orders, says mgmt

Coimbatore March 10 The impasse between Coimbatore-headquartered Pricol Technologies and the workers at its plant here entered the sixth day on Saturday with the management categorically stating `there is no question of revoking the transfer orders issued'.

The rift started when the management issued transfer orders to six of its workmen on Saturday last. It is learnt that the persons concerned refused to accept the order, which was despatched by registered post to their address.

Resenting the stand, the workers numbering about 600, management sources said, took to the street. "We were taken by surprise," its Whole-Time Director, Ms Vanitha Mohan, told presspersons.

Traffic disrupted

The issue took a turn for the worse on Friday night with the workers staging a road roko and disrupting traffic on Mettupalayam Road.

The management has resolved to take a firm stand. Ms Mohan admitted to not having spoken to the workers yet.

However, three rounds of conciliatory talks - two before the Assistant Commissioner of Labour and one before the Joint Commissioner of Labour - do not seem to have resolved the stalemate. According to Ms Mohan, representatives of the striking workers did not turn up at the Joint Commissioner of Labour office for talks on Saturday morning. The next round is slated for Monday. The automotive and other industrial engineering design solutions major Pricol Technologies is encountering such a rift after almost two decades, according to the management. "We wanted to mediate and resolve it ourselves. But they are being pushed by some outside force to take a vindictive stand," Ms Mohan said.

The company employs about 9,000 people - both direct and indirect.

Production continues

Asked if work at the plant had come to a standstill, she said, "No. There has been some disruption, but the production is continuing. The critical parameters are met. A number of suppliers have sent their staff to help us meet the production deadline. We have ramped up production in our units at Pune and Delhi," she said.
