Our Bureau

Hyderabad March 11 The Tobacco Board, which met here on Saturday, has fixed a crop size of 95 million kg (mkg) for the next tobacco season in Karnataka as against 92 mkg in the last season. Last season, farmers grew 97 mkg while the trade demand was pegged at 105 mkg. Dr J. Suresh Babu, Chairman of the Board, told Business Line the farmers in Karnataka on an average realised Rs 56 a kg, Rs 8 more than what they received last year. He said the board was against increasing the crop area.

At 78,000 hectares, all the land considered to be suitable for the premium brand had been covered in the State. For Andhra Pradesh, the board authorised a crop size of 150 mkg. But estimates put the figure at 165 mkg. The farmers are expected to get Rs 49 a kg, Rs 3 more than the last year's realisation.
