Orissa Govt holds talks with ports

In its bid to boost containerised imports and exports to and from the State, the Orissa Government recently held a meeting with the authorities of Paradip port as well as two other ports under construction.

The representatives of private container operators, Container Corporation of India and exporters were also present. The issue of setting up container depots and freight stations also came up for review. But where is the traffic? Paradip now handles only one sailing a month, the cargo inducement being around 300 TEUs — all exports — per each sailing. The inward traffic is virtually zero. Which means, the empties are repositioned at a cost. Concor's Balasore ICD, after having remained idle for several years, recently started handling only domestic traffic.

Orissa's marine products exporters often complain of inadequate container sailings out of the State and of the consequent additional transportation costs incurred for undertaking shipments through Visakhapatnam. But the volume of cargo was too small to warrant more sailings.
