Airlines EU, US open skies deal in limbo
Aviation experts are not sure if much can be achieved in the next round of talks over the "open-skies" agreement between the European Union the US due to resistance from British Airways and Virgin. BA and Virgin currently share control of flights to and from the US via London Heathrow, which handles about 40 per cent of trans-Atlantic traffic. These airlines will stand to lose this advantageous position if the open-skies deal permitting any European airline to fly from any airport in Europe to any airport in the US is struck. Experts favouring the deregulation of this fiercely regulated market estimate that the deal could trigger up to 2 per cent growth in the airfreight market, in addition to throwing up several billion dollars worth of economic benefits and creating thousands of new jobs. Meanwhile, many unions in the US, controlling a cross-section of aviation employees, such as pilots, flight attendants and others, too have opposed the proposed agreement, saying it will not be in the best interest of US aviation workers.
