Coonoor tea prices tumble

Coonoor March 12 With exporters totally staying away and the upcountry buyers choosing to bid lower to compensate for the higher 4 per cent tax under VAT against the previous 2 per cent CST, prices tumbled at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) here last week

Only the unsold portion of the Sales No: 8 and 9 were offered. In all, a volume of 8.07 lakh kg was in the catalogue. The scheduled Sale No: 10 has been postponed to this week.

"Weak demand was witnessed on the limited quantity of CTC leaf grades. Brighter liquoring teas sold lower up to Rs 3 a kg. Better medium and medium teas sold lower by up to Rs 4. Subdued demand was seen for the small quantity of the CTC dust grades. Brighter liquoring sorts here lost Rs 2-3. Medium sorts shed more than Rs 4. Plainer sorts were withdrawn with no bids forthcoming," said an auctioneer.
