3 in fray for Saudi licences

Our Bureau

Mumbai, March 12

The Bharti group, Reliance Communications, and the public sector Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd are the Indian applicants for fixed and mobile telephony services in Saudi Arabia.

MTNL has applied for both fixed and mobile services licences, while Bharti and Reliance have applied only for the mobile services licence, said a statement from Arthur D Little, the global strategy management firm and advisor to the telecommunications regulator of Saudi Arabia on its liberalisation exercise.

The Communications and Information Technology Commission, the telecommunications regulator of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, received overwhelming response from European, Asian and Gulf Telecom service providers for its Request for Applications for award of a second fixed line licence and a third mobile licence, the statement said.

The kingdom's telecommunications regulator received ten applications for its fixed line service and nine for the mobile services licence. Each of the Indian bidders has tied up with a local company in the Kingdom.
