Auto majors keen on multi-level car park project

T.E. Raja Simhan

Automobile majors among other companies show keen interest

Chennai March 13 Automobile manufacturers such as Hyundai, Nissan and Renault, and others such as the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (Japan) and the GBA Group (UK) have shown interest in constructing a multi-level car park facility inside the Chennai port — a port out of which over 100,000 cars are exported.

The Rs 50-crore facility to park around 6,000 cars is likely to come up in the next 18 months at the port's existing North Quay, the port trust Chairman, Mr K. Suresh, told Business Line.

Facilities

The ground floor of the five-storey building would be a passenger station (for cruise ship passengers) and the first floor would have a business centre, food court, shopping centre and a visitors' gallery.

For a fee, the public would be allowed to visit the gallery to have a view of the entire port. The other floors and some areas on the sides of the building would be space for parking cars.

A separate entry/exit gate for the public to visit the gallery would be provided, and the public would not have access to any other areas of the port, he said.

Talks begin

Officials from the GBA Group recently met the ChPT Chairman to discuss the multi-level car park project. The company manages and operates import, export and transhipment vehicle distribution terminals at UK ports such as Grimsby, Southampton, Newcastle and Bristol for automobile manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Skoda, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Kia, Bentley, Honda, Peugeot and Audi, according to information available in the company's Web site.

Mr Suresh said an Expression of Interest was called for the development of multi-level car park in the port for optimum use of the scarce land area, and a notice inviting tender for the project would be issued shortly.

As of this morning for the fiscal ending March 31, 2007 the port handled 1,05,927 Hyundai cars and 40 car carriers. For the entire fiscal 2005-06, the port handled 1,02,692 Hyundai cars and 45 car carriers, he said.
