Kolkata, March 13

The Managing Director of Tata Steel, Mr B. Muthuraman, has come out in support of the Finance Ministry's proposal to impose an export duty of Rs 300 per tonne of iron ore exports.

In a statement issued today, Mr Muthuraman said: "The action of the Finance Ministry is in the interest of the nation and must be commended. In fact, there is need for more stringent and specific measures like a quantity ceiling to make sure that we conserve our minerals and give a fillip to value addition within the country."
