Events States - Maharashtra Pune international film fest opens today Our Bureau
Pune March 14 The Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) is set to open tomorrow. The festival will close on March 22. Speaking to Business Line, Jabbar Patel, filmmaker, said that this year 200 films from 30 different countries would be screened. The focus countries are Norway, France, Hungary, China, Iran and Germany. The festival would be inaugurated by Mr Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Filmmaker Mani Ratnam would be the chief guest. The Oscar-nominated Spanish movie, Volver, directed by Pedro Almodovar, would be the inaugural film. The screenings would be held at E Square, Inox, Ganesh Kalakrida and National Film Archives of India (NFAI). Dr Patel said that the lifetime achievement awards for PIFF 2007 would be presented at the closing ceremony on March 22 and would showcase the US movie, Breaking and Entering, directed by Anthony Minghella. As a retrospective, Mani Ratnam's Kannathil Muthamitaal, Iruvar, Bombay, Nayakan and Yuva would be showcased. PIFF is also screening about 14 films in the world cinema section and six in the Marathi section. In the global film segment, 60 nominations have been received, of which 14 have been selected. One of them would be the receiver of the Prahat International Film Award, which carries a prize of Rs 10 lakh. The Best International Director would be awarded Rs 5 lakh. For the Marathi film segment, the Sant Tukaram International Award with prize money of Rs 5 lakh would be given for the best film. The festival is also paying tribute to directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Babasaheb Fatehlal, music directors Naushad and O.P. Nayyar, lyricist P. Bhaskaran and cinematographer Vasant Shinde. Nilakuyil, the Malayalam movie made by P. Bhaskaran, would be screened.
