DGCA wants airlines to scrap congestion surcharge

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi March 14 The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has appealed to the airline industry to withdraw the Rs 150 congestion surcharge being levied currently.

Sources told Business Line that the DGCA has appealed to the airlines to reconsider the surcharge and report back by March 24.

Apart from Indian, most domestic airlines, including low-cost airlines, have imposed a Rs 150 surcharge to mitigate the additional costs being incurred by them.

The move comes close on the heels of the Delhi High Court asking the airlines to tale a relook at the congestion surcharge.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has been against the imposition of the congestion surcharge from the beginning.

The Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, had earlier said that the airlines were free to raise fares if they wanted to.
