Chennai March 15 With water management becoming commercially sustainable, foreign countries are eyeing India to introduce technology and equipment for water management and wastewater recycling.

According to Mr H. Subramaniam, Editor and Vice President, EA Water Pvt Ltd, the Indian water industry is now lucrative for foreign countries to enter. "Barring the municipal segment, all other segments (like industry, domestic bottled water) are willing to invest in new technology to get water for a price," he told Business Line at the inaugural of the three-day event `Water Expo 2007'.

Setting up of desalination units and introducing industrial wastewater recycling technologies are major areas of interest for countries like China, Korea, Taiwan, Netherlands and others, he said. As of now, foreign companies such as Veolia, Degremont, Siemens Water, Netzsch and Metrohm are present in the Indian market.

As private-public-partnerships in sectors like roadways and infrastructure become common, the water industry would also see similar models to fund growth, he said. The world market for water solutions is worth $400 billion while that for India is estimated at $4 billion.

"Clearly there is scope for growth," he said.

It will also organise workshops on reverse osmosis and membrane technology. About 200 exhibitors from 25 countries would display their products at the event.

The event is organised by EA Water, information and marketing solutions provider in the water industry, and Assocham.
