Telecommunications Voice revenues set to decline, says study Our Bureau
Hyderabad March 15 Oracle Corporation study reveals that over 80 per cent of industry executives believe that voice calls will no longer make up the primary revenue source for communication carriers within six years. Over half of the senior executives queried believe that this will happen within four years, thereby emphasising the need for operators to immediately identify and develop new revenue streams to avert declines in their business. The survey results show that executives worldwide believe that new online Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services such as Skype are the greatest threat to the fixed line revenues, with 68 per cent of respondents identifying VoIP operators as the primary cause of declining revenues. The Senior Vice-President and General Manager, Oracle Communications Global Business Unit, Mr Bhaskar Gorti, said that the results demonstrate how important it is for both fixed line and wireless operators to act immediately. Citing the study of Economic Intelligence Unit, Oracle in a statement said while 72 per cent of executives believe that introducing new services is the most effective strategy to counter falling voice revenue, 65 per cent felt that bundled triple-play offerings are important or critical. More than half believe that mergers and acquisitions with mobile operators are strategies they are most likely to pursue in the next two years.
