No registration or licence is required for the vehicle

Kolkata March 15 Indus Elec-Trans, a division of Electrotherm (India) Ltd, today announced the launch of its YoBykes range of battery-operated two-wheelers in eastern India. The range of six YoBykes variants will be available at prices between Rs 16,000 and Rs 29,000.

Addressing a news conference here today, Mr Avinash Bhandari, Director (Operations), Indus Elec-Trans, said the YoBykes were based on electrical technology where the rechargeable battery replaces the conventional engine. The batteries can be charged as easily as a mobile phone wherever power connection is available. They are manufactured in Kutch, Gujarat. The Gujarat facility has been equipped to manufacture 2,88,000 such vehicles per annum.

"YoBykes can run 700 km at the cost of one litre of petrol. On account of its cost-effectiveness, we have achieved sales of 25,000 units since the product was launched in Gujarat in February 2006," Mr Bhandari said, adding that the life span of the battery was up to 20,000-25,000 km. Since the maximum speed limit has been pegged at 25 km per hour, no registration or licence was required for the vehicle.

Mr Bhandari said the company was gradually rolling out the product in other parts of the country. Over 200 dealers and sub-dealers were appointed across the country. Already, the company had clocked monthly sales of 5,000-6,000 units of the YoBykes countrywide.

Future offerings from the company include hi-speed two wheelers, electric three-wheelers, tricycles for the physically challenged and hybrid electric vehicles.
