Prime land worth crores of rupees in different parts of the State is now in the possession of various organisations.

Thiruvananthapuram March 16 The Kerala Government is planning to form a company to procure drugs in order to ensure the availability of quality medicines to the common people in the State.

The Health Minister, Ms P.K. Sreemathi, said in reply to calling attention motion in the State Assembly on Friday that the Government's endeavour was to eliminate corruption in the purchase of drugs. It had come to its notice that a cartel was operating in the State for procuring and supplying of drugs. The Minister said that the Government would seek the assistance of the State Pharmacy Council for the formation of the proposed company. Besides, more laboratories would be set up in the State for testing the quality of drugs supplied.

The Revenue Minister, Mr K.P. Rajendran, said in reply to a question that the Government would take over the revenue land from the tenants who had not cleared lease arrears. The land used for purposes other than that mentioned in the lease contract would also be taken over. He said that prime land worth crores of rupees in different parts of the State was now in the possession of various organisations such as clubs.

The Petitions Committee of the Assembly had recommended to the Government in 1996 that the Government take over the land of such organisations, including that of the Golf Club in the capital.

The Minister informed the House that the Government had taken possession of 40.25 acres of land leased out to a petroleum company at Kadalundi near Kozhikode on finding that it was used for other purposes. Similarly, 22.45 hectares of land leased out to Harrison Malayalam in Thrissur district was taken over by the Government as the tenant had leased it out to others.

He said that action would be taken on 280 cases that had been detected in Kochi, six in Idukki district, seven in Kollam district, five in Kozhikode district, 42 in Kottayam district and one in Pathanamthitta district.
