The Karnataka Budget for 2007-08 is populist with focus on social welfare, education and drinking water, according to Capt J.P. Menezes, President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). Capt Menezes told Business Line here on Friday that the budget lacked focus on issues related to science and technology, and research and development.
Though the coastal districts are considered as taxpayers' districts, not much attention is given on ploughing back the amount to the district. The Government should have given focus on developing sea-front infrastructure, he said.
On tourism development in coastal Karnataka, he said the Government should give attention on developing basic infrastructure in places such as Tannir Bavi and Sultan Battery. The budget proposes to connect these two points with a ropeway.
Terming the Government's decision to reduce entry tax to 1 per cent on crude oil as a forward step, he said this would help the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL). The products from MRPL will be more competitive in the market, he said.
Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, Convenor of the Vision 2020 Committee of the Cashew Exports Promotion Council of India (CEPCI), said that the decision to set up a horticulture university in Bagalkot should help cashew sector also.
The Vision for Karnataka is to produce 1.4 lakh tonnes of cashew by 2020. The districts in northern Karnataka, including Bagalkot, should contribute a significant portion for that, he added.
