Broadband Broadband connections `poorly' protected, L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore March 16 Broadband connections excite most Internet users. Home users especially do not have a clue about the vulnerability of their systems to cyber attacks. They perceive that the `always on' connection keeps them perpetually connected to the Net. From the perspective of cyber security, the `always on' connection is an accessible component of the Internet. For the cyber attacker, such a system could be and is often used as a `beachhead' for launching subsequent attacks. `While proper system administration would be the first line of defence, home users invariably do not perform such administration properly,' notes Mr Edward Amoroso, Chief Security Officer AT&T. `A market has now sprung up with products that perform various types of security protection for home computers. These include firewalls, intrusion detection systems, Spam removal and virus filtering. Unfortunately, very few really know how to use these products properly. When they do, the result is often inadequate,' writes Mr Amoroso in his book `Cyber Security.'
According to him, computers on broadband connections are for the most part `poorly' protected and many Internet attacks are designed to take advantage of this vulnerability. According to him, the best solution would reside with uniform security solutions from broadband or Internet Service Providers.
