INSURANCE COVER: Mr P. Chidambaram, Union Finance Minister, and Mr M.K. Garg, CMD, United India Insurance Co Ltd, at the launch of `Tsunami Jan Bima Yojana,' in Chennai on Sunday. — Bijoy Ghosh

Chennai March 18 A Union Government-sponsored health insurance scheme for the families below poverty line and affected by the tsunami was launched here by the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on Sunday.

The total insurance premium of Rs 36 crore for coverage extended to 4.5 lakh families will be borne by the Government.

The scheme will be administered by United India Insurance, a public sector non-life insurance company.

Launching the scheme, Mr Chidambaram called upon the hospitals to deal with the tsunami-hit families with compassion.

The Minister also called upon United India Insurance to ensure that the benefits of the policies reached the intended beneficiaries.

He asked the Chairman and Managing Director of United India, Mr M.K. Garg, to monitor the implementation of the scheme.
