Swimming Club declares lockout

Our Bureau

Kolkata, March 19

The management of Calcutta Swimming Club, a 120-year-old institution of Kolkata, has declared a lockout from March 13 following labour problems. The lockout has been declared following a stand-off between the club management and its labour union over various demands in recent times.

In a communication to members of the club, President Mr Anand Chopra said that the club committee had a choice "to either surrender to pressures, threats and intimidations or take the union head-on and set things right. We tried to extend time for our action and make them see reason. Unfortunately, the union thought that (the) club would agree to their unreasonable approach and they will continue to take the liberties as they liked. After considering all aspects, we resorted to a lockout."
