Exports & Imports States - Andhra Pradesh Software exports from AP set to top $4 billion V. Rishi Kumar
Hyderabad March 19 Software exports from Andhra Pradesh, mainly Hyderabad, are set to cross $4 billion (Rs 18,000 crore) and may even touch Rs 19,000 crore in 2006-07. In 2003-04, software exports from the State had topped the $1-billion mark. The year would see a repeat of last fiscal's growth of over 50 per cent in overall exports from the State, with Hyderabad accounting for a majority and with some contribution from the tier II centres of Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. Ms Ratna Prabha, Secretary, Information Technology and Communication, told Business Line: "The export performance in the first three quarters was very encouraging and we are certain about crossing Rs 18,000 crore. We had indicated at Rs 19,000 crore, and we may even hit that mark." The growth is being led by expansion projects of most major companies such as TCS, Infosys, Satyam and Wipro and some MNCs. TCS is looking at further ramping up operations in Hyderabad.
SPECIAL ZONES
On IT SEZs, Ms Ratna Prabha said that they are being implemented and their impact on the State would be felt over 2-3 years. On the hardware policy clearance and new proposals coming up for consideration, she said: "We continue to actively discuss with companies and are always willing to help them set up projects in the State. Recently, Videocon was here expressing interest. However, we have become selective in land allocation." The State Government, along with Software Technology Parks of India, is actively encouraging companies to locate centres in tier II cities. Vizag has become the second major centre. Last fiscal it contributed Rs 109 crore, while Vijayawada (Rs 33 crore) and Tirupati (Rs 5 crore) also chipped in. Last fiscal's software exports of Rs 12,521 crore accounted for 12.5 per cent of total exports of Rs 1,00,809 crore. The State is hoping that this would go up to 15 per cent in the near future.
