Don't impose power cuts till exams are over: Minister

Our Bureau

Mangalore March 20 The power supply company catering to the needs of the Dakshina Kannada district - Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) Ltd - has been requested to maintain uninterrupted power supply in the evenings till the examinations for school and college students are over.

Participating in a meeting to review the power supply condition in the district on Tuesday, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district, said that the examinations for the class 10 students will begin from tomorrow.

In such a situation, Mescom should not resort to power cuts in the evening hours, he said.

"Don't resort to power cuts when examinations for schools and colleges are on the cards. Instead, you can consider resorting to power cuts to industries, since most of them have facilities for power generation," he added.

Replying to the queries raised by the Minister and other elected representatives from the district, Mr Sumanth, Managing Director of Mescom, said that the company has to follow certain directives laid down by the Government with regard to power supply.

The company has been making all efforts to provide quality power to the customers with the existing infrastructure.

Considering the need for infrastructure improvement to supply quality power to the people, Mescom has spent Rs 33.36 crore on capital infrastructure till date.

This amount is much above the figure for 2004-05, when the company spent Rs 9.48 crore on capital infrastructure. In 2005-06, it spent Rs 20.58 crore.

Added to this, the demand for power is increasing and new customers are being added every year.

Mr Shetty said that he would speak to the officials of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd on the problems relating to power cuts in the evenings.
