UTStarcom bags BSNL contract

The deal with BSNL makes UTStarcom the largest broadband equipment supplier in India.

New Delhi March 20 Telecom equipment maker UTStarcom has said it has signed a contract with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd to deploy 1.3 million broadband lines across 900 cities in the country. The total contract size, including 2.5 million lines of core broadband equipment is estimated to be around Rs 550 crore. UTStarcom along with Siemens and ZTE had emerged as the lowest bidders for the over Rs 900 crore project.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr David King, Senior Vice-President, International Sales and Marketing, UTStarcom said, "The deal with BSNL makes us the largest broadband equipment supplier in India, which is an important market for UTStarcom. We expect India to be our second largest market by early next year overtaking Japan. China will, however, continue to be at the top for some more time."

UTStarcom is expecting touch the $100 million mark in terms of sales from India. The company had recently bagged a contract to deploy Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.

"With the recent deployment of our IPTV solution with MTNL and this significant win with BSNL in support of their nationwide broadband network, India is poised to be the fastest growing market for UTStarcom and will continue to play an integral role in the future success of the company," said Mr King.

UTStarcom is also mulling to set up a unit to manufacture broadband equipment in India. The investment, location and the route for setting up the unit is yet to be decided. "As per the conditions laid out by BSNL, we are looking to set up a unit by 2008 ," said Mr Vijay Yaday, UTStarcom's Managing Director for South Asia.
