IPCL employees launch relay hunger strike in Vadodara

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad March 20 Employees of Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd (IPCL) today launched their "path of agitation" with a relay hunger strike at the company's gate in Vadodara district protesting against the alleged mass transfer of mainly unskilled employees to the Reliance Group's Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Jamnagar district.

The company had proposed to "relocate" employees recently to Jamnagar with a view to enhancing productivity of the Vadodara complex and "to handle a contract for developing the sites and greenbelt" in the SEZ. Besides, a voluntary Separation Scheme in 2007 has been announced.

In the first phase of agitation, nine employees sat on relay hunger strike for 24 hours, which will continue for a week, said Mr J.D. Majmudar, General Secretary of the IPCL Employees Association, affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh. He told Business Line from Vadodara over phone that the company's management has not initiated any fresh moves to end the strike.
